Memorializing the life of NASCAR Winston Cup driver Dale Earnhardt
and proclaiming Friday, February 23, 2001, as Dale Earnhardt
Day in the Senate.

Whereas, NASCAR Winston Cup driver Dale Earnhardt attained a
level of fame and respect unsurpassed in motor sports history; and

Whereas, Dale Earnhardt's achievements, both in the world of
motor sports competition and in his personal life, were a great
source of pride to the people of West Virginia and the United
States of America; and

Whereas, Dale Earnhardt's untimely death in an accident during
the running of the 2001 Daytona 500 race has stunned and saddened
the racing world and its millions of fans; and

Whereas, The loss of Dale Earnhardt is incalculable, not only
to his sport and his fans, but to the nation as well; and

Whereas, Hundreds of thousands of West Virginians, touched by
his life and daring, desire to honor his memory and courage;
therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate hereby memorializes the life of NASCAR Winston
Cup driver Dale Earnhardt and proclaims Friday, February 23, 2001,
as Dale Earnhardt Day in recognition of his career, his unbounding
love of competition and the great example he set for others who
dare to achieve greatness; and, be it

Further Resolved, That seven-time Winston Cup champion Dale
Earnhardt and his trademark number "3" be enshrined in the records
of the Senate as they have been, and forever will be, in the hearts
of his admirers and fans everywhere who will always remember him as
"The Intimidator"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward
a copy of this resolution, along with the deep-felt condolences of
the Senate and all of Dale Earnhardt's fans and admirers in West
Virginia to his wife, Teresa, and children, Kerry, Kelly, Dale,
Jr., and Taylor Nicole.
